Exploring the Untold Stories
#SomosSociety is a multi-episode documentary short series that captures the untold stories of everyday Puerto Ricans and those who have stood beside them, who have made lasting, positive contributions to life in Philadelphia. Created, directed, and produced by wife-and-husband team Abigail Torres Meléndez and Eric Meléndez, the project serves as the city’s first video-based historical archive focused on documenting the Puerto Rican experience in Philadelphia. Told through the voices of artists, educators, activists, and neighbors, each episode offers an intimate, human-centered look into the lives of those shaping the community’s cultural identity. The debut film, “I Am Danny Torres,” has received multiple awards and festival accolades, setting the tone for a powerful series rooted in memory, place, and cultural pride. While the series centers on the Puerto Rican community, it also highlights the broader network of individuals; friends, collaborators, and changemakers, whose stories intersect with and support this community. Each short stands alone, yet together they weave a living, evolving portrait of a vibrant and resilient people. In a city rich with Puerto Rican history but lacking a dynamic audiovisual record of its people, #SomosSociety fills the gap, one story at a time.
